Quick-Fire Chats with Alcumus: Taking Your Senior Hires Strategy One Step Further

Getting the right senior talent through the door is critical for the long-term success of a business. A great senior leader will shape the culture of an organisation and inspire and coach their teams to produce their best work. This is why senior hiring needs to be approached with the highest attention and priority.

Although on the market for over 40 years, providing businesses with pioneering technology-led risk management solutions, Alcumus only decided to bring their recruitment completely in-house 2 years ago. As soon as they did, the small but agile in-house team were quickly awarded Best Newcomer at the 2018 In-house Recruitment Awards for their efficient processes and impeccable hiring experience.

Euiain Herring joined the award-winning team in 2017, hired to partner with the Alcumus leadership team and take responsibility for the recruitment of both critical and senior talent, from field sales to director level and everything in between. Euiain will join us at In-house Recruitment Live Manchester to talk about the value of delivering senior hiring in-house and the importance of stakeholder management. Ahead of his presentation, we sat down with Euiain to dive into his topic a bit more.

You’ve won the award for Best Newcomer Team last year at the In-house Recruitment Awards. Tell us a bit about your award-winning team.

I’m part of a small but brilliant team of 5 in-house recruiters at Alcumus that came together in 2017. Today, 97% of our hires are done in-house and our in-house function has so far reduced cost per hire from £3,260 in 2016 to £804 for 2018. This equates to a business saving of £445,031 on the 272 hires since the internal recruitment team was formed.

How important is the senior hiring function for the business?

Because we’re private-equity owned, our focus is on organic growth and this is impossible without good people on board. We are a values and people driven business so our talent, including those in leadership positions, are vital to our success. As a recruitment team, our ethos is all about getting to know the businesses we recruit for inside out before going out into the market. Within my role as a business partner, I spend time with different stakeholders and teams, ensuring I know them and their business areas inside out, so that I recruit the best fit.

What can we expect to learn from your talk at In-house Recruitment Live Manchester?

For my presentation I will explore the value of delivering senior hiring in-house, looking at why senior hires should be delivered in-house, how to approach it, how to deliver it, including the long onboarding process. I will also include some action points to take away at the end.
