Quick-Fire Chats with Grant Thornton: Providing Quality Hires Through Enhanced Assessment & Selection

At In-house Recruitment LIVE! Manchester, Michelle Woods from leading global accounting firm, Grant Thornton will join us to discuss how you can provide improved quality hires through enhanced assessment and selection as well as revealing some of the organisation’s achievements as a result.

Grant Thornton’s redesigned talent attraction piece has reduced the number of applicants by 29% but overall increased the quality of candidates. As such, the application success rate rose to 48% with candidates actively choosing to prioritise their applications for Grant Thornton over other competitors.

Read our exclusive interview with Michelle below:

What are you most looking forward to sharing with your peers from your presentation? What are the key takeaway attendees can expect from your presentation?

I’m really looking forward to sharing how we’ve saved our business time and money by thinking and acting differently. We’ve significantly reduced the number of incomplete applications and improved our progression rates at the same time. One of the other key takeaways would be how we’ve embedded our firm’s purpose into all parts of our assessment and selection process and the impact this has had.

In today’s candidate-driven market, how can employers differentiate themselves from competition?

By knowing their market and what their candidates want. We know we operate in a fairly statured market where we compete for talent with many fantastic employers so we regularly have to think about what makes us unique and what we can do differently to attract the best fit talent for our firm. It’s not always about spending more but thinking creatively. I think employers should be thinking about what makes their firm and experience unique and different – what are they offering to candidates and how does this align with the candidates’ goals and aspirations.

What do you expect to be the key message of this year’s In-house LIVE! Manchester?

How we build a diverse workforce and an inclusive culture. The proposed impact that AI and machine learning will have on recruitment. Candidate experience – how do we maintain this and breed loyalty.

Why do you think it’s important for Manchester’s in-house recruitment community to attend this event?

I think it’s important for all recruiters, at all levels, to keep abreast of the marketplace and to look ahead at what’s coming. In recruitment it’s key we are all adaptable and agile and move with the market. Even better, to plan for what’s ahead. On top of this, I think it’s always useful to network and learn from others.

What has been your proudest moment so far in your current role? Can you share any client success stories?

My proudest moments have been securing new and challenging opportunities. Moving into a HR Business Partner role with little generalist HR experience at the same time, but experience and competence in other areas. Then starting this new role at the firm, Resourcing Manager for trainee talent. Those are personally proud moments and recently it’s been seeing great people in my team get promoted and do great work, and seeing our team drive efficiencies and hire great talent with a lean budget.
