In a recent interview series, IHR’s Natasha Preocanin sat down, virtually, with Duncan Miller and Mathieu Durif, Cornerstone to discuss some of the main challenges talent acquisition teams are facing today and how the recent pandemic has forced new ways of thinking and accelerated a new way of recruiting. Whilst the pandemic has exposed many weaknesses in recruiting, it has also given us the opportunity to recognise unpreparedness and fix the issues before they become an even bigger problem further down the line. But to do that we must be unbound. Being unbound is being released from the constraints of traditional thinking and embracing each and every change that comes our way.
The focus topic for this interview was to look at the skills of the workforce, and more pertinently how and why organisations should shift from hiring for experience to hiring for skills. The Cornerstone People Research Lab found that 83 percent of leaders have prioritised skills development in the past year, compared to just 63 percent within the last five years. Because of this, there has been a transition in recruitment from hiring for experience to hiring for skills. But recruiters must have a firm grasp on what skills need to be bought, borrowed or built – i.e., which to recruit for, which to outsource and what potential exists internally where employees can upskill and reskill.
Skills expert, Mathieu, delves into some fascinating insights on the benefits a skills-based recruiting process has in creating an agile workforce and how this also needs to be aligned with the business’ learning strategy. Most importantly he covers how organisations can make the move to a skills hiring process and what level of training, tools and technologies are needed to make it a success.
