‘Employer Branding: Your Journey & Understanding What Success Looks Like’ was an In-house Recruitment Network breakfast held in London, in March 2016 in partnership with SMRS.
30 eager in-house recruitment professionals joined us for breakfast (and CUPCAKES) for a morning devoted to uncovering and developing their employer brands. Employer branding is crucial to a business’s recruitment strategy in the digital era that we currently operate in. Having a voice and conveying your message as an organisation is a vital talent attraction tool, so we brought together some of the best minds in the industry to help inspire our group of 30 in-house recruiters to adapt their current processes.
Our first special guest speaker, Michael Smyth, Head of Human Resources at GRAHAM Construction, introduced the morning’s roundtable discussions with a presentation on the GRAHAM Construction employer brand and how they’ve evolved to adapt to both different eras and wildly unique locations.
Michael has not only been instrumental in uncovering and nurturing GRAHAM’s employer brand, he also cares about a number of key employment issues; notably youth employment and the long-term unemployed. Michael currently looks after the overall HR strategy for GRAHAM, with a particular focus on leadership and talent development and the GRAHAM School of Excellence for graduates & apprenticeships.

Our second special guest speaker of the morning was the fabulous Jennifer Cunningham, Head of Employer Marketing at SMRS. Jennifer spent around 9 years working for the adidas Group in their recruitment function. Jennifer was instrumental in helping transform and improve adidas’ employer brand and completely overhauled how it translated to the wider talent market. With a serious passion for employer branding, Jennifer joined SMRS in January 2016 as their Head of Employer Marketing, a role which is seemingly perfect for her incredible talent and skill set.
Jenny gave us a critical insight into her time at the adidas group and delivers an invaluable presentation on how to build and embed an employer branding strategy.

During the interactive roundtables, we discussed the following questions:
- What stage are you at with your employer branding?
- Which employer brands do you most admire and why?
- What are your main objectives in the short, medium and long term?
- How are you going to achieve them?
- What are the key challenges you currently face with your employer branding?
- What three points will you take away from this event and implement immediately?
We would like to say a huge thank you to SMRS for partnering with us in this event and for sharing their overwhelming wealth of knowledge on employer branding with us:
As a follow up to this event, we have created a whitepaper guide to give you some visuals on what a good employer brand looks like, as well as tips on how you can improve your own employer brand:
