Diversity and Inclusion in Audit and Beyond

While focused on niche sectors of the employment and recruitment market, CareersinAudit.com and Careers In Group job boards and their users represent a small cross-section of the wider talent attraction industry.

Diversity and Inclusion is just as important to specialist sectors as it is to the wider world of work. But what is diversity, why is it important for both business and talent attraction, and how does this relate to Audit and Governance?

What is Diversity and Inclusion?

In essence, Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) in business is about empowering employees by respecting and appreciating what makes them different, in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, education, and national origin.

These differences between individuals mean that each employee has unique views and life experiences, which in turn will bring unique ideas and approaches when it comes to work.

To create and support a truly diverse workforce, a company’s mission, strategies, and practices need to address cognitive diversity differences in culture, political beliefs, lifestyle and thinking.

More Than Just a Buzzword Phrase

Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) is a phrase that seems to be everywhere in the talent attraction space. What could have originally been seen as a bit of a corporate trend, has now been recognised as a vital concept for global businesses.

Apart from the obvious reason of fairness, companies that create diverse and inclusive workplaces actually benefit from being more creative and adaptable, while also increasing employee engagement and attracting top talent for their teams.

Business teams that include a variety of world views, and where team members feel safe and encouraged to share those views, will naturally ask questions and consider options from more angles, in turn coming up with different ideas and better decision making.

For HR teams in companies where an inclusive working environment is creating higher employee engagement, this also means a reduced employee turnover. Workers who feel included and valued are less likely to look for jobs elsewhere. And when there are positions to be filled, selecting candidates from the entire candidate pool ensures access to many talented individuals with various experiences and backgrounds.

Diversity in Audit and Governance

In the Audit and Governance industry, it’s common knowledge that historically, the majority of audit roles have been held by men, and those who have been brought up with a similar background. As with many industries, this is gradually changing, with growing representation across wider groups now more common.

For audit and governance professionals to deliver a truly excellent service, it is important that they reflect the diversity of their co-workers or clientele. By expanding the diversity of professionals within audit to represent many walks of life, the sector will not only evolve, but also deliver better results.

User Diversity on Careers In Group Job Boards

CareersinAudit.com and the Careers In Group job boards have led the way in diverse candidate attraction within the global Audit and Governance recruitment sectors since 2005. We continue to lead the way in 2021, and will continue to target and attract a diverse candidate base of specialist professionals for employers and recruiters to hire in 2022 and beyond.

Our most recent investigation into Careers In Group candidate demographics revealed a fairly equal split across male and female users (51% vs 49%), as well as candidates who have and do not have children (47% vs 53%). With the majority of users based in the UK and Europe, it was expected that a high number of users would fall under the White/White British category, however 29% of registered professionals in the UK identify as BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic).

As niche job boards, it comes as no surprise that the majority of our registered users (75%) are at Supervisor level or above. Once established in the Audit and Governance industry and with valuable experience under their belt, most jobseekers will search for new opportunities on a job board that specialises in their chosen career area rather than a generalist job board with jobs posted across every industry cluttering their search. In fact, the latest independent NORAS survey found that compared with other job boards and career sites (including LinkedIn and Indeed), 34% of Audit, Risk and Compliance candidates use the Careers In Group job boards first, before any other sites.
