Building Stronger, More Diverse Teams

We sat down with Modiara Kamps who handles EU talent attraction and employer branding at Amazon, discussing how to ensure a more inclusive approach to hiring.

We partnered with Indeed to speak with some influential Talent Acquisition Teams, delving into some of the key challenges, opportunities and key trends to be aware of in 2020, specifically surrounding Talent Attraction, Retention, and Upskilling.

How do you overcome the issues surrounding unconscious bias and ensure an inclusive hiring process which builds stronger, more diverse teams? Modiara explained that at Amazon, they have a range of initiatives in place surrounding D&I and how this ties in with their core values as a business. Some of these initiatives include sensor programmes, and specific leadership principles in place to encourage teams to work more collaboratively and actively seek diverse perspectives. Diversity and inclusion is not just a way to drive productivity and candidate satisfaction but should be ingrained into an organisation’s employer branding and recognised for its value both in the workplace and more widely.

Essentially, having a successful D&I strategy comes from having a genuine understanding of the impact diversity brings not only to your team but in the results that you are then able to achieve as a result of this. Instilling team members with the value of diversity can begin right from the moment of onboarding. In the pre-hire stage, your D&I strategy can be enhanced by actively seeking out candidates who are less advantaged due to their backgrounds, which helps to provide fairer opportunities and ensure that each candidate’s voice is heard. And finally, a key talent attraction strategy for driving a stronger D&I strategy is communicating diversity through your branding; by showcasing your diverse teams. Diversity and inclusion is ever-evolving and with this, comes a range of ways to innovate and constantly be driving your strategy forward.
